Day 3 - Keelung and Setting Sail

I lost the bet about Lorraine buying some trendy shoes (see yesterday).  I put the change in her 'form' down to the fact that gastro issues have not gone away.  She had a sleep in while I walked the city like a man possessed. The locals are probably still talking about this old white bloke trudging the streets at an absurdly early hour while he could have been relaxing around the hotel's pool.

We eventually took a taxi ride up to the Big Buddha Temple (yep, he was there too) which gave us a great view of the city and harbour before packing all of our clobber and putting it into storage.  Then we went on a mission to replace the hat I left on the Melbourne to Manila plane and then to an excellent maritime museum.  The highlight for me was steering a massive cargo ship out of Keelung Harbour - under supervision and only on an impressive simulator.

The big fella

By then it was time to meet our fellow passengers in the hotel and board the boat - and renew some friendships from former trips.  Once all the formalities were done (safety briefings etc) we got unpacked for the next two and a bit weeks and started meeting new friends over dinner while the boat maneuvered its way out of the harbour.  I could have gone to the bridge to 'supervise' the departure but I thought I would leave it to the experts.

It looks like we'll have plenty of room on the boat - it can take 120 passengers but there are only 74 on board.  We probably won't run out of rations for the trip!
