Overnight we motored down the east coast of Taiwan about 10nm off shore. As usual, I was up and about by 4:00am and could see a continuous string of lights along the coast. We pulled into Hualien, the major city on the east coast and took a couple of buses to the spectacular Taroko Gorge National Park.
We were surprised that immigration and security checks were required on the way out and in through the port as we are still in Taiwan. The city of Hualein has a population of about 100,000 and it appears neat and well organised. The bus headed north along the main highway and then turn west and started climbing.
Our itinerary for the day was messed up by yesterday’s earthquake as the only road in and out suffered some landslides – but they will open the road at 10:00am and 2:00pm let traffic through. We stopped at the main entrance to Taroko Gorge and then the administrative centre. There was a 20 wait in line so we could pass the ‘blockade’, as our guide Andrew called it.
